CHURCH HISTORY FROM 1958 TO THE PRESENT
Elder Henry King became the Pastor of Waltown Gospel Tabernacle in 1958 where he pastored for 20 years. The small storefront church was located in Waltown at 1410 Englewood Avenue. The church was often referred to as “The little church on the branch.”
Elder Charles Edward Waddell became the Pastor in March 1978 after the death of Elder Henry King Sr. The Lord gave him a vision of how to build a new tabernacle. Deacon George King was asked to spearhead the project with the men along with the Pastor Waddell working right by his side. In 1986, the completion of the new tabernacle was a monumental accomplishment located at 706 Belvin Ave., Durham, NC. During our first business meeting in the new sanctuary, the name was changed from Waltown to Greater Waltown keeping the rich heritage of the former name.
Elder Waddell was also responsible for the creation and establishment of the annual Education Day Program. He believed that young people should get a good education. His motto was “Education Plus Salvation equals Success.” The Education Day Program was named after Elder Waddell in June 2000 becoming the Elder C.E. Waddell Education Day Program.
Elder Timothy Moore became Pastor of the church after the death of Elder Waddell in May 2000. Some of the projects that Elder Moore oversaw were the building and the completion of a new wing which consisted of a fellowship hall, the enlargement and bricking of the sanctuary, and the paving of the church’s parking lot. Deacon George King was asked to spearhead the project with Deacon Roosevelt Richardson working right by his side.
In 2002, under the leadership of Elder Moore, the Lord
blessed us to purchase a tract of land located beside the church totaling
approximately 2 acres.
